Turmeric is the ground dried rhyzome (rootstock) of the flowering plant Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family. It has a distinctly earthy, slightly bitter, slightly peppery flavor and a faintly mustard like smell. It imparts a vibrant yellow orange hue to foods. It is a popular essential ingredient in south Asian and middle eastern cooking and is also used commercially to add color to a wide variety of foods. Turmeric is an essential ingredient in curry powder.
