The ground, smoke-dried fruit of the Jalapen o variety of pepper plant from the genus Capsicum, a member of the nightshade family. It has a spicy, hot smokey flavor and aroma and is extremely popular in Mexican cuisine as well as in barbecue sauces, meats and roasted vegetables. Can be used anywhere a smokey heat is desired. They register about a 6 on heat scale of 1 to 10.
