Spanish Paprika is the ground, toasted fruit of the red bell variety of the Capsicum annuum plant, a member of the nightshade family. It has a pungent, sweet and slightly smokey flavor, though milder and sweeter than the Hungarian variety. In the United States, paprika is frequently sprinkled on foods as a garnish, but the flavor is more effectively produced by heating it gently in oil.
