The dried oilseed of the Papaver somniferum flower, of the poppy family. They have a nutty taste and distinct crunchy texture. They are widely used as a spice and decoration in and on top of many baked goods including muffins, breads, bagels, crackers and cakes. Toasting them will intensify their nutty flavor and grinding them will release a more nuanced flavor.
